Kalahari Resorts Virginia Opens This November: What Northern Virginia Families Should Know

Northern Virginia families are about to have a very big new option for a weekend getaway — and this one works even when it’s 35 degrees outside.

Kalahari Resorts Virginia is scheduled to open in Spotsylvania County on November 12, 2026, bringing Virginia’s largest indoor waterpark within roughly an hour and a half of Aldie and South Riding.

And when I say big, I mean really big.

The nearly $900 million resort will include more than 1.3 million square feet of space, 907 guest rooms and suites, a massive indoor waterpark, an indoor adventure park, restaurants, shopping and a convention center.

But here's the detail that really caught my attention: you won't necessarily have to stay overnight to use the waterpark.

Kalahari plans to offer day passes and even season passes.

Suddenly, Spotsylvania doesn't sound quite so far away.

Here's what Northern Virginia families should know before Kalahari Resorts Virginia opens this fall.

Kalahari Resorts Virginia Will Have the State’s Largest Indoor Waterpark

Let's start with the main attraction.

At approximately 175,000 square feet, Kalahari Resorts Virginia's indoor waterpark is expected to be the largest indoor waterpark in the Commonwealth.

And because it's indoors, this isn't simply another place to add to your summer list. The waterpark is designed to operate year-round.

Plans include a wave pool, lazy river, surf simulator, raft rides, water slides and areas designed specifically for younger children. There will even be a swim-up bar for adults.

For those of us who start looking for something — anything — to do with the family once Northern Virginia hits those cold, gray stretches of January and February, that year-round piece is a pretty big deal.

You Won’t Have to Book a Hotel Room to Visit the Waterpark

This may be the part of the announcement that makes Kalahari particularly interesting for Northern Virginia families.

Kalahari has confirmed plans to offer waterpark day passes and season passes at its Virginia resort.

That means you could potentially drive down in the morning, spend the day at the waterpark and come home that evening without paying for a hotel room.

Pricing for the day and season passes had not yet been announced as of this writing, so that's one detail I'll be watching as opening day gets closer.

For families who do stay at the resort, indoor waterpark admission is included for registered hotel guests. Guests can use the waterpark beginning on their check-in day and continue using it through their check-out day.

That could make an overnight stay particularly appealing if you want to turn the trip into a mini getaway rather than trying to squeeze everything into one day.

There’s Much More Than a Waterpark

This is where Kalahari starts sounding less like a waterpark with a hotel attached and more like a destination resort.

The property will also include the 90,000-square-foot Tom Foolerys Adventure Park.

Plans for the indoor adventure park include bowling, laser tag, climbing walls, a ropes course, an indoor zip line and more than 250 arcade games.

So if you have a child — or, let's be honest, an adult — who isn't interested in spending an entire day in the water, there will be plenty of other things to do.

The resort will also have multiple restaurants and food-and-beverage options on the property.

In other words, this is designed to be the kind of place where you can park the car when you arrive and not necessarily need it again until you're ready to leave.

An Outdoor Waterpark Is Coming Too

The indoor waterpark may be the headline for the November opening, but Kalahari has bigger plans for warmer weather.

The Virginia resort is also expected to include approximately 10 acres of outdoor waterpark attractions.

That portion will be seasonal, so anyone visiting shortly after the November opening will primarily be experiencing the indoor resort.

But once everything is operating, the combination of indoor and outdoor attractions could make this a very different destination in July than it is in January.

And that makes Kalahari something families could conceivably visit more than once without having exactly the same experience.

Is Kalahari Resorts Virginia a Day Trip From Aldie?

This was my immediate question.

Spotsylvania is certainly not around the corner from Aldie or South Riding. Depending on traffic and exactly where you're starting, you're looking at roughly an hour and a half in the car.

But I also don't think that's unreasonable for an attraction of this scale.

Northern Virginia families routinely drive significant distances for sports tournaments, amusement parks, concerts and weekend activities. If I can drive down in the morning, spend several hours at Virginia's largest indoor waterpark and drive home that evening, I'd consider that a legitimate day trip.

The availability of day passes is what changes the equation for me.

Without them, Kalahari would primarily be a weekend getaway. With them, it potentially becomes something much more accessible: a Saturday activity.

Of course, there is one Northern Virginia reality we should acknowledge.

Traffic.

An hour-and-a-half drive and an hour-and-a-half drive on I-95 are not always the same thing.

I'd definitely check traffic before leaving and give myself some flexibility, particularly on busy weekends.

Should You Make It an Overnight Getaway Instead?

For some families, I think the answer will be yes.

Kalahari Resorts Virginia will have 907 rooms and suites, so staying on the property is a major part of the experience.

And because registered hotel guests receive waterpark admission on both their arrival and departure days, an overnight stay could essentially turn one hotel night into portions of two waterpark days.

That might be particularly appealing if you're celebrating a birthday, looking for a quick winter getaway or simply don't want to face the drive back to Northern Virginia after spending all day chasing children around a waterpark.

For me, the decision will probably come down to those day-pass prices once they're announced.

When Does Kalahari Resorts Virginia Open?

Kalahari Resorts Virginia is scheduled to open November 12, 2026.

Overnight reservations are already being accepted for the new Spotsylvania resort.

Day-pass and season-pass options are also coming, although pricing and additional details have not yet been released.

And the timing couldn't be much better.

The resort opens just as temperatures are dropping in Northern Virginia — exactly when an enormous indoor waterpark starts sounding especially appealing.

One More Reason I Love Living in Northern Virginia

One of my favorite things about living in this part of Virginia is just how much we can reach without getting on an airplane.

We can spend Saturday morning at a Loudoun County farm, head into Washington for a museum or show, drive toward the mountains for a weekend — and soon, we'll be able to head south to one of the biggest indoor waterpark experiences in the region.

No, Kalahari Resorts Virginia isn't in Aldie.

But at roughly an hour and a half away, it's close enough that I absolutely think it belongs on our Northern Virginia list.

Especially in February.
