My friend Wande texted me photos of herself at the Ne-Yo and Akon concert at Jiffy Lube Live last week. No heads up. No "hey are you going?" Just pictures from what looked like an incredible night to hear outdoor music in Northern Virginia - after the fact. That was all I needed. I went down a rabbit hole of everything happening outdoors this summer in Northern Virginia and I am not letting another one slip by. Here's what I found.
The Best Ticketed Outdoor Music Venues in Northern Virginia
Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts — Vienna, VA
Wolf Trap is the only national park in the United States dedicated entirely to the performing arts — and if you've never been on a warm summer evening with a picnic blanket on the lawn, it belongs at the top of your Northern Virginia bucket list. The outdoor Filene Center hosts major acts all summer long across every genre imaginable — from country and pop to opera and classical. The more intimate Barns at Wolf Trap offers a completely different experience for smaller shows year-round. Bob Dylan plays July 24-25. The calendar is stacked through September.
Jiffy Lube Live — Bristow, VA
With a capacity exceeding 25,000, Jiffy Lube Live is Northern Virginia's go-to amphitheater for major touring acts. The lawn is an experience in itself — grab your blanket, your people, and show up early. This is where the big tours come: rock, pop, country, hip-hop, all of it. Ne-Yo and Akon were just here. Capital One Hall — Tysons, VA
A newer addition to the NoVA music scene, Capital One Hall brings a more polished concert experience to the Tysons corridor. Perfect for when you want the live music experience with a little more comfort and a lot less lawn chair.
The Birchmere — Alexandria, VA
Technically indoors but with legendary status in the DMV music scene, The Birchmere in Alexandria is worth including on any serious music lover's list. The intimate setting and incredible acoustics make every show feel like a private performance. Folk, country, Americana, blues — this is where the artists who actually care about their craft come to play.

Every Thursday from June through August, 7-9:30pm. This one is practically in my backyard and it never disappoints. Bring your lawn chairs, grab food from a nearby spot, and make a whole evening of it.
Vienna Summer on the Green — Vienna, VA
Vienna Town Green, 144 Maple Avenue
Free Friday and Sunday concerts running all the way through September at 6:30pm. One of the longest-running free concert series in NoVA and a beloved community tradition.
Rock the Block — Fairfax City
Old Town Square, Fairfax City
Fourth Friday of every month, May through October, 6:30-9:30pm. Live music, beer garden, food vendors, all ages — and completely free. The July 24th edition is happening this weekend. This one has a real festival energy that punches way above its price tag.
Spotlight by Starlight — Annandale, VA
Ossian Hill Park, 7900 Heritage Drive, Annandale
Free Thursday evening concerts from June through August, 7:30-8:30pm. A hidden gem tucked into one of Fairfax County's most established neighborhoods. Bring a blanket and enjoy music under the stars.

My personal favorite on this list. Lark Brewing in Aldie brings live music, great craft beer, and a community vibe that is completely unique to Loudoun County. Keep an eye on their events calendar — they have something happening almost every week.
Music at Arrowbrook Park — Herndon, VA

Free Saturday evening concerts from July through August. A hidden gem for Herndon and Reston area residents that doesn't get nearly enough attention.
National Landing Free Concert Series — Arlington, VA
1601 Crystal Drive, Arlington
Free Friday concerts at 5:30pm through August 29th. Perfect if you're coming in from DC or want to make an evening of it near the airport corridor. Jonathan Sloane performs July 25th.
Before You Head Out to Your Next Northern Virginia Concert
A few things worth knowing before you head out — always check the venue's website or social media before you go since weather cancellations happen, especially in July and August when afternoon storms roll through NoVA fast. For Wolf Trap and Jiffy Lube Live specifically, buy your tickets early. The best shows sell out faster than you'd expect.
