Exhibit A: Why strawberry season is non-negotiable in our house.

Strawberry season is one of my family's absolute favorites. There is something about spending a morning in a field with buckets, coming home with more berries than you know what to do with, and eating half of them before you even get to the car. If you have never gone strawberry picking in Northern Virginia with your family, this is your year. And if you have — you already know. The season in Northern Virginia runs roughly from now through early June, so the window is short. No strawberry farms in Fairfax County itself — but Yankey Farms in Bristow is less than 30 minutes from most of the county and absolutely worth the drive.

Here are five farms worth putting on your list.

1. Wegmeyer Farms — Hamilton, VA (Loudoun County)

The farm my family keeps coming back to. Wegmeyer offers both a strawberry CSA and pick-your-own at their Hamilton Farm location — two locations means more availability. The fields are beautiful and the whole experience feels like a proper farm day out. Check their website for current picking status before you go. wegmeyerfarms.com

2. Yankey Farms — Bristow, VA (Prince William County)

Located at 11812 Bristow Road, Yankey Farms runs their strawberry patch from early May through mid-June. Reservations are only required on Saturdays and Memorial Day Monday — all other days you can just show up. A great option for a spontaneous weekday outing. yankeyfarms.com

3. Great Country Farms — Bluemont, VA (Loudoun County)

Strawberry picking at Great Country Farms is expected to open mid-May 2026, and their season typically runs through early June. What makes this one special is the full farm experience — there's a play area, animals, and activities that make it a full day for families. The views from Bluemont don't hurt either. greatcountryfarms.com

4. Hartland Orchard — Markham, VA (Fauquier County)

Located at 3064 Hartland Lane in Markham, Hartland Orchard is open every day from 8am to 6pm with strawberries usually starting in early May. About an hour from NoVA but worth the drive — the scenery on the way through Fauquier County alone makes it a morning well spent. hartlandorchard.com

5. Hollin Farm — Delaplane, VA (Fauquier County)

A three-generational family farm open Wednesday through Sunday from 9am to 4pm, with strawberries available mid-May through mid-June. The farm sits high on the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains with panoramic views that are genuinely spectacular — this one is worth the 45-minute drive from NoVA for the scenery alone. No admission fee. Always check their website before you go as availability changes daily. hollinfarms.com

Before You Go Strawberry Picking in Northern Virginia — A Few Tips

Strawberry season in Northern Virginia moves fast. Fields can be picked clean by midmorning on a weekend, so go early and go on a weekday if you can. Always check the farm's website or Facebook page before you leave — availability changes overnight based on weather and how quickly the berries are ripening. Bring more buckets than you think you need. You will fill them.

And if you want the full festival experience, mark your calendar for the Lincoln Strawberry Festival happening May 15-17 — strawberry picking, live entertainment, contests, and family fun all in one place.
