Mahjong in Loudoun County: New Dedicated Venue Coming to Leesburg

If it seems like suddenly everyone you know is learning to play mahjong, you’re not imagining it. Mahjong in Loudoun County is getting even bigger, with a new dedicated venue planned for Leesburg.

As first reported by The Burn, a new mahjong venue called East Goes First is planned for Leesburg, bringing lessons, open play, guided play, memberships and special events to local players.

East Goes First plans to open in the retail section of the Crescent Place community on Harrison Street SE in Leesburg.

According to The Burn, the venue describes itself as Loudoun County's first dedicated mahjong house and plans to welcome everyone from complete beginners to experienced players.

And that's what makes this particularly interesting.

You won't necessarily need to arrive with three friends who already know how to play. Plans include lessons for different skill levels, open play and guided play, which could make this an easy way for someone who's been mahjong-curious to finally learn the game.

Why Is Everyone Playing Mahjong?

Mahjong may be centuries old, but its latest resurgence is very 2026.

The Burn reports that Eventbrite saw the number of mahjong events listed on its platform jump 179% between 2023 and 2024, while Yelp reported enormous growth in mahjong clubs appearing on its platform.

But I think the appeal is pretty easy to understand.

It's social. It's competitive. It gets people together in person. And in an era when so much of our entertainment involves staring at a screen, sitting around a table learning a game with friends feels refreshingly old-school.

When Will East Goes First Open?

There's no official opening date yet, but according to The Burn, the owners are currently hoping for a December 2026 opening if everything goes according to plan.

For those of us farther south in Loudoun, it will mean a trip up to Leesburg — but considering how popular mahjong has become, I have a feeling plenty of Aldie and South Riding players won't mind making the drive.
